The passenger characters, full of personality and realism, came to life by meeting actors who perfectly matched their roles. If the set played the role of 40%, the acting of the passenger characters will fill the remaining 60% and make the audience immersed.”

High-drop, zero-gravity, up to 360-degree rotation sequences
A real aviation disaster completed with a one-year pre-production process!
Behind the scenes of a well-made project flying around the world
Director Han Jae-rim worked with art, photography, lighting, and VFX to prepare for the filming continuation as the producers of <Declaration of Emergency> all mentioned that “the story was filmed as it was.” The continuity book, which was completed at a level close to animation, even included a detailed shooting guide, which was a great help to actors preparing for acting. In addition to the pre-visual animation work, director Han Jae-rim and the production team took a highly meticulous preparation process through a large-scale production to minimize errors that occurred during filming.
Director Han Jae-rim paid attention to the way it shows that numerous spaces and characters on the ground and in the sky are closely intertwined around one incident. The analysis of which space could give the audience the most delicate sense of reality was followed, and the results of thinking about how each background could have cinematic continuity even in the event of going back and forth between the ground and the air was reflected in the lighting, art setting, and shooting method. . Here, the collaboration between the art team and the special effects team was important in producing the airplane set that would be the site of the disaster. The art team worked on the set based on the body and parts of an actual airplane airlifted from abroad. In addition, as there are sequences that rotate the entire set by 360 degrees, attention was paid to safety to prevent possible injuries to the actors in advance. The special effects team put the best technology into the set that the art team had solidly built so that the high-flying sequence and the zero-gravity sequence could be realized like a real situation. The lighting team, which made the most of the light inside the real airplane, excluded artificial or distorted lighting, and added realism to the real sky through high-sensitivity shooting. In addition, the 'flicker effect' created by the movement of the sun and clouds was taken advantage of by focusing on the design of the light to give the audience the feeling that they are moving on an actual plane. In response to these details, the actors praised the perfect production, saying, "It felt like filming in a real airplane, so I was able to feel the overwhelming sense of reality."
The realistically completed film <Emergency Declaration> through organic collaboration with all production teams will give the audience a more vivid experience than ever before.
[ PRODUCTION NOTE ]
Complete the extreme realism!
Implementation of a super-large airplane set that rotates 360 degrees for the first time in Korea
The movie <Declaration of Emergency> took on a new challenge through the screen for the first time in Korea. In cooperation with a Hollywood set manufacturer, an actual large airplane was airlifted from the United States, and the set was made using the body and parts of the airplane. Director Han Jae-rim said, “We focused on realism. I made it so that the audience did not feel that 'the plane was fake' while watching the movie, and I used a gimbal to shoot with movement.
The production team of <Declaration of Emergency> completed a gimbal that would rotate the airplane set 360 degrees and put it into filming. It is not only the first case of filming while rotating a real-size aircraft set with a rolling gimbal made with a diameter of 7m and a length of 12m, but also a unique production that is hard to find in foreign countries. The production team went through a total production period of about 60 days, excluding the drawing work, as the airplane set rotates 360 degrees and calculates the changing load. Art director Lee Mok-won, who worked on the KTX set for <Train to Busan> and then produced the airplane set for <Declaration of Emergency>, said, “There were a lot of parts and the process was complicated. In addition to the general gimbal, the rigidity of the set was also important because a lot of shooting equipment such as a rolling gimbal, 6-axis motion base gimbal, and air bounce had to be used. Every little part was taken care of, and safety tests were completed after all parts were assembled. I thought it was safe to say that it was not excessive, so I checked it more thoroughly until the end.”
In addition, a more realistic set was completed through the details reinforced by inviting the current aircraft captain as an expert advisor. Song Seok-ho, the current pilot of T'way's airline, said, "The plane that is set in this movie is a Boeing 777. Among them, some devices were added as advice to express the fact that the aircraft has been used for more than 30 years.” Captain Song Seok-ho said, “In order to express the initial model, the electric power of the captain and first officer was changed manually. In addition, while the device for inputting flight information is usually white, it appears green in the movie, but it is a result of reflecting the details of the actual early model.”
Handheld shooting, which will transfer the visual dynamism to the screen, is also essential. A set made using a real airplane is rotated using a rolling gimbal, and it is handheld to give the audience a special sense of immersion that has never been experienced on the screen. Director Han Jae-rim said, “It was filmed 100% handheld. I want you to watch our movie with the feeling of 'I feel like I'm on a plane right now' instead of 'This is a movie'."
Three continuity, detailed pre-visual
Weaving the story of the earth and the sky into one
The story of <Emergency Declaration> proceeds with the situation of the two spaces intersecting, on the ground and in the sky. Detailed storytelling was more important than any other film in order to seamlessly connect the scenes on the ground and in the air. Director Han Jae-rim said, “There was a lot of CG, and there were a lot of intersections of space. I tried to perfect everything from how the shots and cuts were divided, the angle of view, the characters’ emotions, props, and even the costumes.” He added, “I felt like I had already filmed a movie with the key staff during the continuation process. Thanks to meticulously working on the full story three times, I was able to shoot almost 100% of the story as it was.” informed that it could be done. Director Lee Sung-hwan said, “The director wanted a realistic approach. I worked on a continuity that suited it, and I never took a cut that went beyond the continuity.”
In addition to this, <Emergency Declaration> has also strengthened the pre-visual and pre-CG work. In order for the actors to be more immersed in the character, a high-quality free visual was pre-produced based on the storyline. Director Han Jae-rim said, "Before filming, I explained the situation to the actors through the free visual, and this process helped to enrich the actors' imagination." told
In addition, as the limited space of an aircraft was used as one of the main backgrounds, the exterior of the aircraft was realized with an LED screen to maximize the realism. An LED screen was installed outside the cockpit window, and the actual outside scenery was expressed in pre-CG work and VFX, so that the LED screen that the actual VFX is transmitted to when the actors are performing is captured in the camera. CG manager Hong Jeong-ho said, “We measured the size of the gimbal as well as how much the movement of the gimbal had an effect, and designed and installed an LED screen suitable for it. We discussed with the cinematographer and lighting director how to prepare the videos from the LED screen. Not only did we consider details such as brightness, but we also worked delicately on the images to be sent to the LED screen through DI.”
The production of <Declaration of Emergency>, which contains the worries and challenges of all the staff, from three full story works, perfect pre-visual production, and VFX using LED screens, will make the audience immerse themselves in the story in an instant.
